Sonya Pfeiffer and David Rudolf join Brauti Thorning LLP

Sonya and DavidBrauti Thorning LLP is pleased to announce Sonya Pfeiffer and David Rudolf have joined the firm. Sonya and David are a passionate, experienced husband and wife team who have secured large verdicts and settlements in high-stakes civil litigation and represented business executives, professionals, athletes, and politicians in some of the most high-profile federal and state criminal investigations and prosecutions in the United States.  Together, Sonya and David have dedicated their lives to thorough, fearless advocacy.   In addition to their legal practice, Sonya and David also co-host the Webby Award-winning podcast on Audible, Abuse of Power.

As a journalist, Sonya worked internationally in Paris and Tel Aviv and covered major international stories including the Yitzhak Rabin assassination and the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords.  She worked in the United States in Omaha, Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Boston and New York.  She worked abroad in Paris and Tel Aviv.  Pfeiffer has also directed and produced documentary films including the award-winning short “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Social Justice.”  

Pfeiffer attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill, then spent several years as a public defender.  She later worked at a large corporate law firm before joining Rudolf, with whom she has practiced law for the past decade. A skilled communicator, Pfeiffer has successfully counseled numerous clients through both jury trials and complicated plea negotiations.  In addition to her trial work, Pfeiffer regularly moderates discussions and panels on a variety of topics; through her background in journalism, filmmaking and law, Pfeiffer brings a unique perspective to conversations related to the legal system and the public perception of the system.  Sonya sits on several boards in the United States, including the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.  In addition to her law practice, Sonya owns an award-winning contemporary art gallery in Charlotte, North Carolina focusing on socially engaged artwork and exhibitions.

David Rudolf is one of the pre-eminent trial lawyers in the United States, specializing in high-profile and complex criminal and civil rights cases.    David has been listed for more than twenty-five years in the Best Lawyers in America and was one of only three criminal defense lawyers selected for the inaugural class of the North Carolina Lawyer Hall of Fame. In recent years, in addition to his work defending individuals accused of crimes in federal and state courts, he has successfully represented individuals in civil rights litigation against law enforcement agencies arising from wrongful convictions. 

David has taught Trial Advocacy at the UNC School of Law and for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and Criminal Litigation at Duke University School of Law.  He has also been recognized for his work with professional organizations, serving in various leadership positions in the ABA Criminal Justice Section, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers and Advocates for Justice.  Most recently, he has received world-wide acclaim for his representation of Michael Peterson in The Staircase on Netflix. 

As a result of his work in The Staircase, David received the prestigious Praeses Elit Award from the Dublin Law Society at Trinity College in Ireland.  Previous recipients have included Former President FW de Klerk, who helped bring about a peaceful transition to the end of apartheid in South Africa, and Sir Bob Geldorf, who organized the global food charity concert Live Aid.  

At Brauti Thorning, Sonya and David will be assisting the firm on various matters including the defense of criminal cases, business and fraud litigation and high-conflict, complex family law matters.  They will also teach Trial Advocacy at the University of Toronto.
